Lunenburg Tour
The head of St. Margaret's Bay is an area noted for the beauty of its shore scenery, rugged coastline and quaint fishing villages. We see all this and more along the Lighthouse Route on the way through Mahone Bay to Lunenburg.
Mahone Bay is one of Canada's best known seaside towns that is recognized' by the three churches side by side at the head of the inlet. We see the churches as we pass by on the way to Lunenburg.
Lunenburg was founded in 1753 by the British Colonels' administrations. The first settlers were German, Swiss and French immigrants. The town was built on a peninsula with both a front and a back harbour. It also is the birthplace of the Bluenose 1, built in 1921. A replica of the Bluenose 2 was built here and launched in July 1963.
The Fisheries Museum of the Atlantic is on Lunenburg's famous waterfront. Located in the building of a former fish processing plant, you will find an aquarium second to none, three floors of exhibits, a theatre, Parks and a working dory shop. The site includes two deep sea fishing vessels, the Schooner "Theresa E. Connor" and the steel-hulled side trawler "Cape Sable." Lunenburg offers unique gift shops which sell pewter, handcrafts, quilts, paintings and lots more, take time to browse. Departing Lunenburg we travel on route #103 to Halifax.
